Beyond the Key Episode of the week
NBA fans are always enticed to see what will happen each year in the lottery. This lottery was no different and thousands of fans tuned in to see where their team would be slotted to pick. Teams that struggled this past season give their fans a glimmer of hope that the future of the franchise could be in this year’s choice. Some teams in the lottery were not expecting to be when they entered the season. A couple of these teams are the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder. They get the opportunity to grow on to teams that are already close to title contention. While the back half of the lottery played out exactly how everyone expected it to, lets just say the top got a little twist. Here is this year’s NBA lottery.
NBA Draft Order:
There are plenty of storylines for the Timberwolves as they have received the #1 pick in this year’s draft. First of all, it is the first time the franchise will ever have the #1 pick. Along with that, because of the trades the Timberwolves have conducted in the past year, they will end up having the last 3 #1 picks. The hardest decision comes June 25th though when the clock starts and they will presumably choose between Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor.
The Lakers came next, who now become a big storyline with the chance to have a future superstar come into the equation, with the possibility that this could be Kobe Bryant’s last season in the NBA. If anything, this top pick gives Lakers Nation hope that in the coming years they could get back into title contention as everyone expects them to be, year in and year out.
While the 76ers did end up shockingly as the #3 pick, I think there is definitely some disappointment inside the organization. Only because going into the night there was a small chance to end up having 3 of the 14 lottery picks. The Lakers (needed to be top 5) and Heat (needed to be top 10) were fortunate enough to land in these regulations to keep their picks. With all of this in mind, look for the 76ers to look at the two top point guards with their pick in, D’Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay.
As we move further down the draft board we notice the New York Knicks slide out of the top 3 and landed the 4th pick. While very disappointing for Knicks fans and the organization, who were expecting to have a top two pick, the draft is deep this year and there is still plenty of talent to be excited about. I would say look for the Knicks to shop this 4th pick and see if they can move down in the draft for a couple more draft picks and possibly an already proven NBA player.
Headed down the rest of the draft board it will be interesting to see who these teams bring in to work out in the coming month leading up to the draft.
It is always a blast to see who rises up and who slides down the draft board as the draft approaches! The clock is officially counting down and we could not be more excited here at Beyond the Statistics!
